Priene Ancient City

Priene, built on the slope of Mount Mycale, is one of the best-preserved Hellenistic cities of the ancient world. Its regular grid layout (the Hippodamian plan) is considered one of the first masterpieces of urban planning.

Highlights of the city

The city's symbol is the elegant columns of the Temple of Athena, designed by the architect Pytheos. Looking down the slope, you are met by a unique view that once commanded the sea and today overlooks the fertile plain.

Visiting tips

As it is built on a slope, the walk can be a little tiring; comfortable shoes and water are essential. Early morning or the last hours of the day are ideal for both the cool air and the light. It is about 50 km from our villas.
